Incomes, housing and feminisation of poverty

Economic resources are essential for people to develop an autonomous life. The economic structure of our society is based on gender inequality in which the most socially and economically valued positions are occupied mostly by men.

The gender analysis of poverty shows us that, beyond the available material resources, there are other dimensions, such as lack of time, work overload, health status, etc., that shape not only the way in which women suffer poverty differentially, but also precariousness.

Finally, access to housing is essential to live with dignity and security but also shows differentiated patterns between women and men in Barcelona.

  • Feminization of poverty

Inequality in income

An important element in understanding economic inequality between men and women is income from work. This refers to the resources derived from paid work and the position occupied in the labor market. On the other hand, gender gaps in income through pensions or household income are also very important in understanding income inequality between men and women.

Housing

It is important to consider housing from an accessibility point of view, but also as a good that promotes security and stability. In general, men have more access to property than women, as this is linked to people's income and job stability. On the other hand, women have more access to housing in a social security or rental system.

Feminization of poverty

Women are in a greater situation of poverty than men as a result of gender inequalities. In addition, the usual axes of inequality such as age, origin, class or sexual orientation generate particular experiences of poverty risk. This fact translates into a lack of economic resources, but not only that. They also have to do with precariousness, lack of economic autonomy, lack of availability of one's own time (time poverty), etc.
