Films. Barcelona's 28th International Women's Films Festival opens on 1 June

Given the safety measures imposed because of the Covid-19 crisis, the first part of this year's Festival is now an online programme, which can be seen on Filmin.

From 1 to 14 June, an online version of the Festival will present an overview of contemporary films directed by women, monographs from pre-eminent film-makers, a programme for children and parallel activities in the presence of the film directors featured in this first instalment of the 2020 edition.

The programme for the 28th edition includes an activity dedicated to fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin, with the participation of Eulàlia Lledó, Helen Torres and Blanca Busquets, a creative competition aimed at women who wish to film a utopia in a one-minute video; a retrospective selection featuring the work of documentary maker Marta Rodríguez, a pioneer in registering and defending the rights of the rural and indigenous population of Colombia; and a selection of sixteen films that form an overview of contemporary creation, offering a variety of examples of women’s dissidence as well as various ways of representing collective subjects.

Children’s programme
The children’s programme has two previews: Les vides de Marona [The Lives of Marona] (Anca Damian), an animated film that has won awards at various international festivals, and Binti (Frederike Migom), which won the European Children’s Film Association award for Best Children’s Film this year.

The 2020 one-minute video: Utopias
The one-minute video is an open invitation to women who wish to register their take on a common theme, which is chosen every year. This year, the idea is to create an archive of videos that explore the creation of possible, fantasy or hyper-realistic worlds. An exercise in imagination with the aim of representing societies that favour the sustainability of liveable lives. Videos may be submitted until 30 May.

The Festival
Barcelona’s International Women’s Films Festival was first created in June 1993. It aims to promote films directed by women, showcasing women’s audiovisual culture and screening the films of women directors from around the world, in order to underline the importance of women’s contribution to the development of audiovisual creation.

The Festival is supported by Barcelona City Council.
