Mariana Mazzucato to be awarded an honorary doctorate by the UOC

Universities. The investiture ceremony for the economist, one of the most influential in the world, is to take place at the Saló de Cent and will be attended by Ada Colau and Teresa Ribera.

Born in Rome and based in London, the influential economist Mariana Mazzucato is to be awarded an honorary doctorate by the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) at a ceremony to be held in Barcelona City Council's Saló de Cent on Thursday 3 February at 6pm. The distinction aims to recognise his career in the field of sustainable and inclusive growth driven by innovation. The event, which will be attended by the Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, and the Minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, can be followed live on the UOC's YouTube channel and on its social networks under the hashtag #honoriscausaUOC.

Mariana Mazzucato is Professor of Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London (UCL) and founder and Director of the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) at the same institution. She is considered a world leader in economics and has been an advisor to political leaders around the world. A specialist in the study of economic, technological and social transformations, she holds positions on economic and social advisory councils in many regions of the world, such as Scotland, South Africa, Argentina, Sweden and Norway, as well as in institutions such as the WHO and the OECD.

Thanks to her brilliant career, she has received international awards such as the John von Neumann Award (2020), the Madame de Staël Award for Cultural Values (2019) and the Leontief Award for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought (2018). Wired magazine has ranked her among the top 25 leaders shaping the future of capitalism and, according to Fast Company, she was one of the 50 most creative people in business in 2020.

In addition to her work as a consultant, teacher and researcher, Mariana Mazzucato is also a great disseminator of economic knowledge with internationally successful books such as The Entrepreneurial State: Debunking Public vs. Private Sector Myths (2013), The Value of Everything: Making and Taking in the Global Economy (2018) or, the most recent, Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism (2021).
