Ada Colau inaugurates the Panikkar Year to promote and value his legacy

The city council devotes a whole year to the most internationally acclaimed interreligious and intercultural Catalan philosopher

The “Saló de Cent” of Barcelona hosted an act full to the brim

Barcelona City Council, in collaboration with the “Generalitat”, organised through BCN Intercultural Programme and his intercultural facility, “Espai Avinyó”, the inauguration of the Panikkar year at city council’s “Saló de Cent”. The act had set the starting point to commemorate the centenary of Raimon Panikkar’s birth, one of the most influential thinkers of the modern era. This celebration is a unique opportunity to spread his ideology and put in value his legacy on interreligious and intercultural dialogue.

The act was hosted by journalist Antoni Bassas, a friend of the philosopher who recalled their conversations at Tavertet, where Panikkar spent the last 25 years of his life.

Ada Colau, Mayor of Barcelona, vindicated dialogue as the key point of his interreligious philosophy: “To vindicate dialogue, a word often belittled and even despised, that today more than ever needs to be vindicated (…) dialogue is not only about speaking, is about to learn to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, to talk taking into account the other’s point of view. Every dialogue is an opportunity to learn, and here is where Panikkar’s approach is particularly relevant today. Dialogue is empathy, courage, humility and intelligence”.

Among the assistants were many close friends of the philosopher: Milena Carrara, president of the Raimon Panikkar Foundation, Victoria Cirlot, Professor of Philosophy and expert on Panikkar’s teachings, Swami Satyananda Saraswati, Agustí Panikkar, and Jordi Pigem, philosopher and writer with a doctoral thesis named “Raimon Pannikar’s Thought: A Philosophy of Interdependence”.

Ignasi Moreta, Commissioner of the Panikkar Year, presented all the planned activities and underlined the importance of this initiative to raise awareness on Pannikar’s ideology impact on today’s world.

Ms. Maria Dolors Portus, Secretary-General for Cultura of the “Generalitat”, intervened to highlight the importance of Raimon Panikkar’s legacy in Catalonia and the world.

The Panikkar Year is jointly organised by the “Geenralitat de Catalunya” and many other institutions and cultural entities. The “Espai Avinyó” and many other municipal facilities have programmed activities during the whole year:
