The extension of extended stay and residence permits in Spain continues, but measures regarding international protection and immigration applications and reports are changing.

Now that the state of alert ordered by the government in response to the Covid-19 situation has come to an end, there have been some legislative changes in relation to immigration measures. These changes relate in particular to international protection and immigration applications and to the immigration reports issued by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

The measures that remain in place are those relating to the validity and extension of extended stay and residence permits. The six-month extension to work and residence permits after the end of the state of alert is particularly worthy of note.

Main changes to immigration rules

All other documents containing the FAQs published by SOAPI are no longer valid after the end of the state of alert. The main changes relate to:

Suspension of administrative deadlines: Under Royal Decree 537/2020 of 22 May 2020, administrative deadlines are no longer suspended and start running again on 1 June. View the updated information.

International protection (asylum and refuge): There are specific extensions, and the appointment system is once again operational. View the updated information.

Immigration reports within the remit of the Generalitat de Catalunya: The immigration report preparation and notification service has resumed its operations electronically. Furthermore, from 22 June all face-to-face support offices will start reopening, and procedures that had been suspended will be resumed. View the updated information.
