Barcelona City Council is premiering an exhibition on Monday, 10 October, to show the advances being made towards the playable city that Barcelona aspires to be, explaining the accessibility model under which work is being carried out to achieve play areas for everyone. In addition, a discussion event will be held on Tuesday, 11 October, on how these children’s play areas can be made accessible.

“Cap a una ciutat jugable per a tothom” [Towards a playable city for everyone] is the title of the exhibition premiering on 10 October in the afternoon, organised in collaboration with the Institut Infància i Adolescència, COAC and the Centre Obert d’Arquitectura. It can be visited at COAC’s Centre Obert d’Arquitectura itself (Plaça Nova, 5), Mondays to Saturdays, from 10 am to 8 pm, and Sundays, 10 am to 3 pm.

The exhibition is divided into four parts: an account of the advances being made towards a playable city; the City Council’s model and strategy for creating play areas for everyone; the accessibility criteria that need to be followed and, what’s more, a display of the results of the competition launched a few months ago for ten totally accessible play areas.

A discussion event at COAC

This exhibition is being complemented with an event entitled “Accessibilitat a les àrees de joc infantil” [Accessibility to children’s play areas], taking place on Tuesday, 11 October, at 4 pm, at COAC’s Sala Mirador. Aimed at experts and professionals in sectors of architecture, urban planning and children’s games, the session will put the focus on game-accessibility combination in public spaces. There will be a two-and-a-half-hour discussion on the needs and contradictions of accessibility in play areas and on real and effective regulations and accessibility to Barcelona’s play areas.

Taking part in the event will be the Deputy Mayor of Ecology, Urban Planning, Infrastructures and Mobility, Janet Sanz; the head architect at the City Council, Xavier Matilla, and COAC’s Barcelona Province Chair, Sandra Bestraten. Other participants will include the teams of the proposals given the highest rating by the competition’s jury for ten totally accessible play areas and several experts in accessibility and children’s games.
