Park Güell has received a World Responsible Tourism Award for its system to regulate visitors. Awarded by the World Travel Market, the annual international fair for the tourist sector, these prizes recognise tourist management practices and initiatives which can serve as examples for the travel and tourism sector in other cities in the world.
Reducing the impact of overcrowding in the park and its environs was one of the main goals of the Park Güell Strategic Plan, applied since 2017, although access to the monumental section of the park has been regulated since 2013.
The plan outlines a series of measures designed to improve the park’s social return for the city and continue conserving its architectural and natural heritage. For instance, it seeks to recover outdoor activities historically held in the park, open up times when the park is available for use by citizens and improve the website to cater for people’s needs better. These measures are intended to combat the increasing feeling among local people that they have lost the park.
