The new Port Olímpic opens to the public
21/07/2024 - 15:43 h
Viewing points and paths for people to stroll along make up the 20,000 m2 plus of public space that connect the city with the sea here. The port has been revamped around sustainable nautical activity and the blue economy.
One of the cornerstones in the transformation of the port has been the creation of new spaces designed for people in Barcelona. Squares, viewing points and paths to stroll along and spend time in, with green spaces, and linked to the three new entrances to redefine a more permeable port, open to the Vila Olímpica neighbourhood and the beaches.
The Moll de Mestral wharf, where nightlife venues and terraces stood a few years ago, now offers a large space of more than 8,000 square metres. The new garden elements and a large wooden pergola now make this a pleasant space beside the sea. The seawall is now also a viewing deck for the city coast.
New areas of activity
The centre for companies in the blue economy has as many as fifty spaces between the Moll de Mestral wharf and the sea wall. The port opens with twenty companies operating here, some of which are already active.
In parallel to the transformation of the Port Olímpic, a complete revamp to the Municipal Sailing Centre is also under way and will be completed in July. The idea for this new chapter at the centre is to promote sailing for all.
As for dining, the new Gastronomy Balcony is a restaurant deck at the Moll de Gregal wharf which is set to open at the end of August, with new architecture and new eating options.
Sustainable space
Sustainability has been a central theme in the transformation of the Port Olímpic, with installations such as photovoltaic pergolas at the restaurant deck, fast-charging facilities with green energy for electric boats, the use of seawater for air-conditioning systems inside blue economy premises, the configuration of a bioregeneration reef and more.
Public celebration
A public celebration was organised throughout the day, with workshops, family activities and music to celebrate the reopening of the Port Olímpic.
