New step to make play areas safer and more comfortable for children in the city, one of the groups most vulnerable to extreme heat. The new tendering process has a budget of 2,275,000 euros and should guarantee shade in 34 play areas next summer.

The initiative is one of the measures to adapt the city to the climate emergency, with work in essential public spaces. The shades will consist of fabric supported by tense cables, which can be taken down during the months when there is less sun.

The play areas have been chosen according to three criteria: solar radiation in the central hours of the day, the impossibility of planting trees and the quality of play. These are:

• L’Eixample: Jardins d’Ermessenda de Carcassona and Jardins de Rosa Deulofeu.
• Les Corts: Torre Melina – Josep Sunyol i Garriga.
• Sarrià – Sant Gervasi: Plaça de Pep Ventura.
• Gràcia: Jardins de Menéndez y Pelayo, Plaça del Poble Gitano and Jardins d’Antoni Puigvert.
• Sants-Montjuïc: Jardins de les Tres Xemenies, Parc de la Primavera, Gran Via – Radi – Carretera del Prat – Plaça d’Ildefons Cerdà,Jjardins de Cal Sèbio (2 areas), Plaça de Joan Pelegrí and Jardins de Màlaga (2 areas).
• Horta-Guinardó: Ronda del Guinardó – Sardenya,Jjardins del Baix Guinardó (2 areas), Avinguda de la Mare de Déu de Montserrat, Mas Ravetllat, Penyal, 20, Plaça de Palestina and Avinguda de Can Marcet.
• Nou Barris: Parc Esportiu de Can Dragó, Passeig de Valldaura – Via Favència – Guineueta and Plaça de Salvador Puig Antich.
• Sant Andreu: Rambla de l’Onze de Setembre – Virgili i Palomar – Fernando Pessoa – Valentí Iglésias – Cinca.
• Sant Martí: Freser – Indústria – Trinxant, València – Espronceda – Clot – Biscaia, Àlaba – Doctor Trueta, Bilbao – Ramon Turró – Llull, Parc del Maresme and Plaça de la Infància.

Part of the Programme for Local Interior Spaces

Barcelona has plenty of shade through urban greenery, but work is needed to add more shade in public space. Through the shade programme, part of the Programme for Local Interior Spaces, the plan is to install 216 shades. The measures planned include shades in school playgrounds to protect children from high temperatures.

Shades combat the heat island effect, facilitate energy savings in buildings and promote the use of public space, helping improve people’s quality of life.
