Health. A new municipal service for young people in the districts, easy to access and with no prior appointment needed.

‘Konsulta’m’ is a psychological support service for young people between the ages of 12 and 22. The service is aimed at detecting mental health problems among people of these ages and providing preventative psychological support.

The service is being run one afternoon a week in community facilities with activities for young people and offers a prompt, agile, specialised response for any youngsters who need it. No prior appointment or referral is needed.

‘Konsulta’m’ is also for professionals working with groups of youngsters and who need advice on specific cases or situations they come across in their daily work. At present the service is up and running in the districts of Ciutat Vella (Casal de Joves Palau Alòs), Sant Andreu (Espai Via Barcino), Nou Barris (Centre Cívic Zona Nord) and Sants-Montjuïc (Hospital de Dia per a Adolescents en Salut Mental).  Other spaces are due to open between now and the end of the year, extending the service to all city districts.

Prevention and advice service

‘Konsulta’m’ is part of the Barcelona Mental Health Plan 2016-2022, which prioritises support for children, teenagers and young adults. The report ‘Mental Health in Barcelona 2016’, compiled by the Barcelona Public Health Agency, shows that psychological suffering among teenagers and young people increased in 2016, compared to 2012. The report also points to the need for professionals working with young people to receive support relating to mental health.

‘Konsulta’m’ has been conceived to reach teenagers and young people before psychological complaints deepen or become mental health issues. At the same time, the idea is to promote a service which adapts better to the habits and behaviour of young people in order to offer better support.
