ARTIST WORKSHOP WITH JEAN-MICHEL GUY AND VOLMIR CORDEIRO
Mercat de les Flors and La Central del Circ, in collaboration with El Graner centre for the creation of dance, are proposing a new creative, experiential and training initiative for 2018: an “artist workshop” directed by Jean-Michel Guy (FR), researcher, art advisor and director, and Volmir Cordeiro (BR), choreographer, dancer and researcher.
For two weeks, they will guide 15 artists (between 7 and 8 from each discipline) towards a new approach to movement and contemporary circus, while analysing both practices to understand their current demands. This workshop is aimed at contemporary circus artists and artists who work with movement that requires a high degree of physical commitment, who are also interested in creating a situation that is conducive to the research of new circus and dance practices. This workshop will follow a laboratory format and will take place from 9 to 21 April 2018. It will conclude with a show in the context of the Circ d’ara mateix series from Mercat de les Flors.

Who it is aimed at
Professional circus and movement artists with a high level of technical skill in the field of dance or circus, with an author or creator profile, the capacity to propose and develop artistic ideas and the ability to work as part of a team. Artists must originate from and/or be based in and/or usually work in Catalonia, be available and committed throughout the duration of the workshop (an agreement will be signed), and be able to participate in the show on 21 April 2018.
Compensation and amount
Mercat de les Flors, El Graner and La Central del Circ will cover the cost of the workshop. Participating artists will receive aid in the form of an allowance. The total amount to be received for this concept is €690, which will be paid in two halves at the beginning and the end of the project. This amount will be subject to an 80% attendance of the workshop and the show.

Location
This workshop, delivered over 2 weeks by Jean-Michel Guy and Volmir Cordeiro, will take place at La Central del Circ (Moll de la Vela 2, 08930 Sant Adrià del Besòs - Fòrum) from 9 to 13 April between 10:00 and 18:00, and at Mercat de les Flors (Carrer Lleida 59, 08004 Barcelona) from 16 to 21 April between 10:00 and 18:00.
Application process
Applicants must send their CV, images (preferably web and/or other links where the applicant’s work can be viewed) and a motivation letter. If necessary, the candidates may be summoned to an interview.
Assessment criteria
The following will be assessed:
- previous circus-related artistic experience (for dancers) and dance-related experience (for circus artists)
- An artistic background
- Motivation to be part of the series
- Understanding of French, Portuguese and/or English.
Selection
The selection of participants (between 7 and 8 for each discipline: contemporary dance and circus) will be the responsibility of the artistic directors from Mercat de les Flors, El Graner and La Central del Circ.
Calendar
Applications must be submitted before 14 January 2018. The workshop will take place from 9 to 21 April 2018 and will end with a public show within the context of the Circ d’Ara Mateix series from Mercat de les Flors.
