Exchange Grants for Artistic Projects between Stuttgart and Barcelona

For the sixth consecutive year Hangar publishes this call for artist exchange grants between Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia. This grant was created in 2015 on the initiative of the Goethe-Institut Barcelona, ​​the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg, the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart –WBK and the visual arts production and research center Hangar (Barcelona) and is supported by the Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Wurttemberg –MWK- and the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Aim of the call and target candidates

The aim of this call is to offer four artists (2 from Baden-Württemberg and 2 from Catalonia) a mobility and production grant to support the development of artistic projects linked to the contexts of each of the participating centers and institutions, to promote inter-regional exchange between creators of Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia, and to enable dialogue experiences between two artistic communities and their social groups.

The call is open to all visual artists of any age and nationality living in the geographical area of Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia, who are developing proposals in the field of contemporary public art, performance, installations, sound art, visual arts, audiovisual art and new media, etc

Length of the residency

The residencies will last two months each and will take place in June and July in Stuttgart, and September and October in Barcelona.

Benefits and endowment

  • Travel expenses: 300€.
  • Financial endowment: 1.800€ living expenses (2 months) and 900€ production costs (gross amounts).
  • Accomodation and workspace.Use of the centre infrastructures.
  • Occasional technical assistance. If the project requires full time assistance, the costs will be added to the production budget.

 

*The residency does not include medical insurance. Artists must personally take out medical insurance valid for the length of the residency period.

Application Deadline

Applications may be submitted up to May 17th 2020, at 11:59 pm CEST.

If the documentation is not submitted by the established deadline, the application will be considered null.

Selection process

The meeting of the jury and the announcement of the chosen projects will take place on the first week of April 2020.

Commitments of the selected project

Selected artists will commit to:

– Taking part in project communication activities during their residency.

– Providing a final project report to the centres involved together with an evaluation of the residency at some point during the month after its completion.

– Producing a presentation of the results at the end of the residency. In Barcelona, ​​the presentation will take place within the framework of Paratext. In Stuttgart, the presentation will take place at the Kunstverein or in another suitable location.

– Include the participating institutions logos.

– During the residency, the selected artists pledge to maintain active contact with the artists living in the host city.

Assessment Criteria

The following shall be assessed:

– Interest of the proposal according to the lines of work of each one of the residency centres.

– Ability of the project to solve the issue it raises.

– A realistic appraisal of the time and suitability of the project objectives to the context and resources of the participating centres.

– The cross-cutting nature of the project itself, that is, the applicability and communication of its results to other contexts or people.

– The project's ability to involve the network of collaborators of the participating centers and institutions.

–  Cultural, artistic and social projection and impact of the residency.

  • Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg The Baden-Württemberg Art Foundation is an institution that promotes the development of young creation in contemporary art. It aims to support the development of the artistic work of young emerging talents – who live or were born in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg – for a limited period of time. This guarantees financial independence and freedom in the artwork. The Foundation supports young talents in the fields of visual arts, performing arts, literature, music, art critics and cultural management with subsidized international artistic residencies, providing work space and accommodation. Through production, event organization and publications, the Foundation brings its works to the attention of a wider public.

  • Kunstverein Stuttgart.  The WKV supports the production, work processes and construction of contemporary art knowledge on a theoretical and practical level. Their work focuses on workshop management, promoting artistic research projects, co-producing new artwork and developing complex exhibition scenarios, among others. 

  • Goethe-Institut Barcelona. The Goethe-Institut is the Federal Republic of Germany’s cultural institute, active worldwide. It aims to promote knowledge of the German language abroad and foster international cultural cooperation. It conveys a comprehensive image of Germany by providing information about the cultural, social and political life of the country. It works on the basis of mutual dialogue and is therefore at the service of all those who are actively involved in German language and culture. To this end, it cooperates with both private and public cultural bodies and promotes cooperation with local cultural agents, organising and supporting a wide range of cultural activities.

  • Departament de Cultura de la Generalitat de Catalunya.

  • Hangar Barcelona.  Is an open research and artistic production center that supports artists and creators. Hangar’s mission is to support creators in all phases of the visual arts production process and to contribute to the best achievement of each of their projects. To this end, all their services focus on facilitating artists’ access to the necessary material and technical resources and on providing a context for experimentation and the free transfer of knowledge. 

Application submission

Each artist may submit their application to the competition with one project only. The application must be sent in pdf format by email to marzia@hangar.org with the heading “Beca intercanvi Baden-Württemberg Catalunya 2020”.

The document must contain:

 

  • Personal details (full name, date and place of birth, DNI or passport number, email and telephone contact).

  • Biography (2500 characters maximum, including spaces).

  • Artist statement. This is not a biography but rather a brief description of the artistic identity of the project, its thematic, theoretical and formal characteristics (2500 characters maximum, spaces included).

  • Motivation letter (2500 characters maximum, spaces included).

  • Project (2500 characters maximum, spaces included).

  • Graphic dossier (up to a maximum of 10 images with their technical specs).

  • URL (only for videos). This field is optional if images have been added to the graphic dossier and is compulsory if there are no added images. Write one URL only to a video or animation piece (personal website, vimeo, youtube, blip.tv or any other). The committee will view a maximum of 5 minutes of video.

  • URL personal website.

 

Applications may be submitted in English, Catalan or Spanish. If the candidate submits their application in Catalan or Spanish, an English translation must also be sent for assessment in Stuttgart.
