Open call for 20 grants to develop a creative writing project in any literary genre

 

The programme Barcelona Ciutat de la Literatura (Barcelona City of Literature) is launching its author award selection process for a maximum of twenty awards to develop a creative writing project related to Barcelona for the 2020 period.

 

The Montserrat Roig awards for creative writing are offered as part of the Barcelona Ciutat de la Literatura de la UNESCO programme for the year 2020.

Arts Discipline

Creative writing in any literary genre (apart from theatre)

Target Candidate

Authors of literary works, writers, poets, translators and/or journalists of any nationality and who have a minimum of one work published in their name with a corresponding ISBN number. Authors must be aged 18 and over.  

Length of Residency

Grant-awarded authors will have access to a free work space to develop the submitted project over a period of two months.

 

The work space will be available during two periods throughout the year: March-June 2020 (spring session) and September-November 2020 (autumn session).

Work spaces are available in the following establishments and institutions:

  • Vil•la Joana Casa Verdaguer de la Literatura (Barcelona City History Museum)
  • Biblioteca de Catalunya
  • Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres
  • Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes
  • Fundació Joan Miró
  • Biblioteca Nou Barris
  • Biblioteca Francesca Bonnemaison
  • Castell de Montjuïc
  • Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona
  • Museu Picasso

 

Each author will have access to a work space with table and chair. The writer must bring their own computer.

Benefits and Endowments

Selected authors will receive the sum of 1500€ per month for two months and have access to a work space to develop their project. The total sum of each award, therefore, will be 3000€.

 

Travel and maintenance costs for these two months must be met by the author.

Conditions

Grant holders must:

  • Respect the operational norms and timetables of the venue hosting the residency and keep regular attendance there
  • Participate in the final open session of the residency to explain the completed work to the public
  • Submit the completed written project to the Institut de Cultura once the residency has ended
  • If the work is published, make sure the credits include the phrase “Aquesta obra va rebre una Beca Montserrat Roig de Barcelona Ciutat de la Literatura – Institut de Cultura – Ajuntament de Barcelona”, in accordance with the regulations of the corresponding corporate image

Selection Criteria

  • Degree of definition and precision of project (maximum score: 10 points)
  • Literary value of text submitted by author (maximum score: 10 points)
  • Career trajectory of applicant outlined in CV (maximum score: 5 points)
  • Interest of project for the programme Barcelona Ciutat de la Literatura (maximum score: 5 points)
  • Connection of the project with city of Barcelona (not an essential requirement but will be very positively valued (maximum score: 5 points)

 

The maximum score possible for each submitted project will be 35 points.

Selection

The committee will be comprised of:

  • Victor Garcia Tur, novelist and short story author
  • Patricia Escalona, writer with experience in the publishing sphere
  • Mireia Perelló, bookseller

Authors interested in applying for this award must submit an application that follows the model found in appendix 1 of the rules or at the Barcelona Ciutat de la Literatura website:

To this application form should be added the following documentation:

  • Photocopy of DNI/NIE/Passport
  • CV of applicant (maximum 2 pages)
  • Document proving that applicant has one published work showing:
  1. Author
  2. Title
  3. Publisher
  4. Year of publication
  5. ISBN number
  • Statement and description of project to be carried out in the two-month period (maximum 2 pages)
  • Extract of project to be developed over this period (maximum 5 pages)

 

This documentation can be submitted in Catalan, Spanish or English.
