ARTS RESIDENCIES AT LA ESCOCESA 2020

4 November, 2019 - 00:01 to 28 November, 2019 - 23:59

La Escocesa is increasing its access throughout 2020 as part of its aim to expand its community: it is offering 35 mid- and short-term residency places for creators from any discipline who would like to form part of La Escocesa’s arts collective.

Arts Discipline

Multidisciplinary

Category A: Creation Residencies at La Escocesa (28 places)

Private-use workshops for multidisciplinary artists and creators (individuals or in collectives made up of a maximum of 3 people) who require a space for explorations with materials or a place for contemplation.

The workshops come in a variety of dimensions (approximately 30m2) and characteristics; their allocation, therefore, will be determined according to what best suits each artist or project. However, all of them have openings in their upper section, a fact that makes La Escocesa a space where acoustics must be negotiated between all residents. This must be borne in mind particularly for projects that involve specific acoustic conditions.

  • A1. 2 years: March 2020 – February 2022 (8 places)
  • A2. 1 year: March 2020 – February 2021 (8 places)
  • A3. 6 months: March 2020 – August 2020 (6 places)
  • A4. 6 months: September 2020 – February 2021 (6 places)

Category B: Translocalized Creation Residencies (3 places) NEW!

Translocalized creation residencies offer individual artists from various disciplines a workspace and suitable surroundings in host centres that are within a short geographical distance from La Escocesa and are closely linked to contemporary arts practices.

The aim of this project is twofold: on the one hand, to facilitate contact between participating artists and professional centres currently developing materials closely related to their fields of enquiry; on the other, to offer host centres the opportunity of having in their installations an artist who specialises in their fields of work and research. This would then allow for the fruitful reception of innovative or lateral viewpoints that, through the development of the project under consideration or simply through daily contact and conversation, might provide a context for shaping new ideas and fostering a relationship that is beneficial to both. Host centres are committed to offering a workspace to the guest artist, at all times under the conditions and hours of access previously negotiated. They also commit to making their resources available to artists for them to develop their project correctly, also with the timetable, norms of use and boundaries that are considered appropriate.

  • B1. 6 months at Barcelona BTV public tv station: March 2020 – August 2020 (1 place)
  • B2. 6 months at the Fundació Joia: March 2020 – August 2020 (1 place)
  • B3. 6 months at the ‘gastronomic space’ Santa Rita: March – August 2020 (1 place)

The 3 residencies each offer a specific space, a work table and access to the infrastructure; to these should be added the specific resources of each centre: sets and resources for video artists at BTV; access to the community of users and mental health inclusion services at the Fundació Joia; access to a professional kitchen and daily contact with a chef at Santa Rita for projects related to this context.

Translocalized residencies will be regularly accompanied by a third party who will act as mediator between each artist and their host centre, coordinating regular meetings with both with the aim of resolving potential problems and facilitating support mechanisms for the smooth running of the projects under development.

Submitted proposals should envisage positive scenarios for both the use of centres for the aims of the submitted project and the ways in which the resident artist can participate actively in the specific dynamics of each centre. More information about the host centres can be found at beteve.cat, fundaciojoia.org and santaritaexperience.com.

Category C: Research Residencies at La Escocesa (2 places)

La Escocesa is awarding 2 places for research residencies, directed at individuals and collectives (made up of a maximum of 3 people) who are currently developing a piece of research, concerning issues related to the arts in general or related fields, that has the potential to establish connections with the La Escocesa community. The residency periods will last for one year, from March 2020 until February 2021.

Granting of the residency guarantees a work table and furniture suitable for storage in a workspace designed specifically for research purposes inside the La Escocesa premises. It will also allow access to communal spaces to be used as meeting spaces, the library and La Escocesa’s archive of fanzines and hand-made books, the Fanzinoteca, as well as all other resources available to resident artists.

Category D: Residencies for Collectives at La Escocesa (2 places)

La Escocesa is offering 2 50m2 spaces, specifically aimed at collectives of 3 or more people who are currently developing work, concerning issues related to the arts in general or related fields, that has the potential to establish connections with the La Escocesa community. The residency periods will last for one year, from March 2020 until February 2021.

The spaces contain openings in their upper section, a fact that makes La Escocesa a space where acoustics must be negotiated between all residents. This must be borne in mind particularly for projects that involve specific acoustic conditions.

Residency Features

Each residency implies a cost of 48.50 Euros per month, by way of the costs derived from using the workshop. This price includes internet service, electricity and water, and is applicable to the use made of La Escocesa by individuals and collectives, as well as by translocalized residencies. The sole exceptions to this are research residencies (category C) which, by dint of not having access to their own workshop, are exempt from these expenses.

In line with the centre’s associative management model, residents will in time join the Associació d’idees EMA, management body of the La Escocesa entity. All resident artists (individuals and each member of a collective) will automatically become an associate of La Escocesa, for which they must pay an additional quota of 58 Euros every 6 months (in March and September).

For further details on quotas, bonds and obligations to the venue, please consult the full information here (Característiques de les residències section).
