Barcelona came out in fourth place in the latest index of sport cities, a ranking by the company TSE Consulting and the magazine Around the Rings. The index is based on major sporting events held in cities, their public sports facilities and the active and healthy population of each one.
This edition saw 50 cities take part, with Barcelona only beaten by London, Rio de Janeiro and Lausanne. Another determining factor is having hosted an Olympic Games, with Rio gaining places in the ranking for this reason. The final position is determined following a combination of an online public vote and the votes of experts in the sports sector.
David Escudé, Commissioner for Sports at Barcelona City Council, welcomed the news, pointing out that “we’re holding our own at the peak of world sport thanks to the ongoing and rigorous work of the city’s entire sports sector”. Escudé also noted that “this consolidation of the Barcelona brand in sports comes at a particularly significant moment for the city, which is getting ready to mark the 25th anniversary of the Barcelona ‘92 Olympic Games.
