Safety and prevention. The operation gets under way at 7 am on Sunday, 23 July, 2023.

The City Police are conducting a special operation to ensure that the election day goes smoothly on Sunday, 23 July 2023. The police will be working together with the Mossos d’Esquadra corps to distribute the documents needed to constitute voting points, as well as keeping an eye on premises used for the election.

The work of the City Police for the general election starts on Saturday, as the corps is the body responsible for collecting and transferring all the electoral documents from the Barcelona Electoral Board (located at the Ciutat de la Justícia) and corresponding to the city’s 285 polling stations.

The following day the City Police will have the task of ensuring that 127 of these polling stations are working properly, while the Mossos d’Esquadra corps will do the same with the rest. Besides ongoing monitoring to ensure the election day goes smoothly, other tasks carried out by the police are:

  • Delivering all the electoral documents to representatives from the administration at polling stations.
  • Communicating the legal constitution of voting points.
  • Communicating the opening and closing of polling stations and any incident that might impede the constitution of voting points or the start of voting at the scheduled time.
  • Picking up and transferring judicial authorities to all necessary locations.

The city’s police corps will be mobilising around 530 officers on Sunday to carry out these tasks.
