Safety and prevention. The police corps shared different projects on technology for managing security and social harmony.

The meeting was organised by the Spanish Forum for Urban Prevention and Security (FEPSU), which promotes debate and the networked exchange of good practice to tackle urban security challenges faced by cities.

The internal presentation of “Smart Cities and Security” projects was held in Gandia yesterday (30 March), the goal being to share experiences and forge ties for collaboration before the challenges and opportunities offered by new technologies for managing security and coexistence.

The City Police shared the following projects:

  • Event data recorders (EDR). A recording system stores a series of anonymous parameters for vehicles using the roads. The goal is to investigate and reconstruct road accidents more accurately and thoroughly.
  • Automatic number plate recognition cameras. A system capable of detecting and digitally reproducing a number plate on any sort of vehicles through various images (up to 40 per second).
  • Use of smartphones by officers. A member of the corps analysed the advantages of modernising communication systems with smartphones.

The Spanish Forum for Urban Prevention and Security, which Barcelona City Council is a member of, is an association of municipalities which defends and promotes public prevention and security policies.

It promotes the dissemination of experiences, projects and public policies between member cities through meetings, seminars, working sessions and publications, also advising on the formulation of projects linked to public prevention and security policies.

The exchange of experiences between cities, such as yesterday’s session, offers a chance to improve the management of different tech innovation challenges through solutions and experiences which have been effective in neighbouring cities. At the same time, it contributes to the generation of collaborative knowledge for the smart management of cities.

FEPSU is Spain’s representative in the European Forum for Urban Security (EFUS), an association with 250 member cities and regions from 17 countries.
