DD Education Suite (Democratic Digitalisation)
First prototype education platform in the city to use auditable open-source software
The DD platform has been developed through the joint work of Xnet, the City Council and the Barcelona Education Consortium. Usability in this pioneering initiative equates to that of the most widely used tech platforms in educational environments. The main difference is that as DD uses auditable open-source software, it guarantees interoperability and the sovereignty of student data.
The pilot project includes guides to help schools understand application of the legal framework to defend their digital rights. The project not only helps schools to go digital, it also guarantees the digital rights of all those involved: students, teaching staff and families. The platform also aims to offer a public alternative to the instruments offered by tech giants.
Municipal support to extend the project
During the process of development, implementation, skills acquisition and rollout, which started in February 2021, Xnet has been working with various schools in the city: Escola Baixeras, Escola Montseny, Escola Els Xiprers, Escola Heura, Escola Patronat Domènech, Escola Vila Olímpica, Institut Caterina Albert, Institut FP Narcís Monturiol, Institut Maria Espinalt, Institut Pedralbes, CFA El Clot. Participants in the process include a group of promotor families, the Federated Associations Student Families in Catalonia (aFFaC), plus IsardVDI and 3iPunt as development companies.
The idea for Barcelona City Council is to enable the pilot project to rolled out in new schools and municipal facilities offering training activities, such as libraries, community centres and other municipal facilities.
