Grammy-nominated musician, singer, producer and drummer Kassa Overall is coming to BAM to showcase his cutting-edge experimentation with hip-hop production techniques that take jazz and rap in new directions.
In Animals, his latest album , Kassa draws inspiration from his mentors Elvin Jones and Billy Hart, with collaborations with jazz and rap artists like Danny Brown, Wiki, Lil B and Shabazz Palaces.
Animals also reflects the paradoxes of Kassa's own life as an artist and a black American man; he shares with the audience the cost of expressing himself freely in public, and acknowledges that this freedom can often feel like a life inside a cage.
