Remunicipality of the water

Remunicipality is the process for which a service that originally had been public, as for example water, and it has become private comes back in municipal hands. Some of the arguments that back up this policy are: the fact that water is a common good and a universal right, the necessity to have a transparent management of this resource and to be an accessible service for all people, water is not merchandise.

In the world, 235 cities or villages have carried out processes of remunicipality of the service in the last 15 years. In Catalonia, there are small towns that have already remunicipalized the service of water and therefore, they have a public management of the service. In Barcelona, the water management is privatized, but the debate about is on the table and is one of the proposals of the current town council.
