Opening session of the retrospective dedicated to the feminist and decolonialist scholar, accompanying the exhibition Seen Yet Unseen by La Virreina Centre de La Imatge. An exploration of the complex and changing narratives about China, followed by a discussion with the filmmaker.
In this essay, Trinh Minh-ha reflects on this process of "harmonization" in rural China due to the country's Great Uprooting, seeking to engage the viewer by posing the questions: What exactly is disappearing? And how?
Shot between 1993 and 1994 in villages in eastern and southern China, linked in the shared imagination to the remote origins of their civilization, the film takes the notion of harmony in this country as a place of creative manifestation, offering a journey through the richness of its traditional architecture while exploring the inner territories of self and other in their encounter.
