LGBTI. Conference on tackling LGBTI-phobia in Barcelona

The event will be held at the Barcelona LGBTI Centre on 8 November, with a conversation between Maria Eugènia Gay Rosell, deputy mayor for Social Rights, Culture, Education and Life Cycles, and Mr Miguel Ángel Aguilar, prosecutor at the Discrimination and Hate Crimes Unit of the State Prosecutor’s Office; and a round-table discussion on the city’s protocol for LGBTI-phobic discrimination.

The round-table discussion will feature representatives from the Office for Non-Discrimination (OND), the Barcelona LGBTI Centre and the Observatory Against LGTBI-phobia (OCL), as well as the Catalan Association for Welcoming Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Immigrants (ACATHI) and the Catalan Refugee Aid Commission (CCAR). Together with people who have firsthand experience of these issues, they’ll focus on the inter-sectional nature of discrimination based on LGTBI-phobia and racism.

The action protocol for cases of LGTBI-phobic discrimination reflects the need to coordinate the various stakeholders and networks, both public and private, available to help the city of Barcelona tackle this kind of discrimination.

The goal of this document is to detail the process that has to be followed for dealing with detected cases of discrimination and/or human rights violations on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression among the main stakeholders involved: the Office for Non-Discrimination (OND); the Barcelona LGBTI Centre and organisations involved in detecting rights violations and assisting and supporting victims, such as the Observatory Against LGTBI-phobia (OCL). Representatives from these three organisations will be taking participating in the round-table discussion.

The conference is one of the activities being organised in the run-up to the UNESCO Global Forum against Racism and Discrimination, which will take place in Barcelona from 9 to 11 December.

The session will be held on Friday, 8 November, from 4.30 pm to 8 pm, and is open to everybody. Participants must register in advance at https://inscripcions.barcelona.cat/jornada_lgtbi/
