An event in memory of Sonia Rescalvo Zafra, a transsexual woman murdered by a group of Neo-Nazis in 1991, is being held at 11 am on Sunday 6 October.
The event will take place at Parc de la Ciutadella, at the Transsexual Sonia Bandstand, which has borne her name since 2013.
Sonia Rescalvo was born in Cuenca in 1945 and moved to Barcelona in 1961, at the age of 16. There she became part of the artistic world of El Paral·lel and, more specifically, the Teatre Arnau. She worked for many years as a showgirl, gaining considerable fame.
As a result of the crises in variety shows she moved to and worked in Parc de la Ciutadella.
Murder and condemnation
She was brutally murdered on the morning of 6 October 1991 by a group of neo-Nazi skinheads at the bandstand at Parc de la Ciutadella. Sonia was sleeping in the bandstand with her friend Doris, who was also attacked. The neo-Nazi group attacked and blinded a homeless man in the park’s greenhouse, before they fled.
The events were reported by the Catalan Gay Liberation Front (FAGC) and the Gay and Lesbian Coordinating Committee. A trial was held at Barcelona Provincial Criminal Court in 1994, and the attackers found guilty of murder and sentenced.
The bandstand she was murdered in was renamed the “Transsexual Sonia Bandstand” in 2013, following a proposal from the LGTBIcat Platform.
The event, presented by the trans activist* Sabrina Sánchez, starts at 11 am and includes various activities around the bandstand: a living library, storytelling with a trans focus and activities for children.
At 12 noon, the people attending will be welcomed by Laura Pérez Castaño, the Deputy Mayor for Social Rights and Global Justice, Feminism and LGTBI Affairs, and there will be speeches from members of the city’s LGTBI activist movement, in memory of Sonia and what she represented in the fight against hate crimes and the defence of diversity.
The event is being organised by Barcelona City Council, with the participation of Barcelona’s LGTBI Municipal Council.
We look forward to seeing you there!
