Urban planning. The announcement was made during the act of homage for the architect, who would have been 96.

The city lost the architect on 30 November, a figure who devoted his life to transforming society and improving conditions for citizens. An act of remembrance was held with his family on what would have been his 96th birthday. The contribution of Oriol Bohigas to the city’s urban and architectural development, along with his cultural commitment to Barcelona, earned him the City of Barcelona Gold Medal, a distinction which means his name can become part of the city’s street name index.

Bohigas, remembering a full life devoted to Barcelona

Architect, urban planner, thinker, intellectual and researcher, Oriol Bohigas stands out for his prolific work, mainly in Barcelona. From the group of homes in Ronda del Guinardó to the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the Garbí and Thau schools, his legacy leaves us a large number of outstanding works. One of the most important works commissioned to him was the design of Barcelona’s Olympic Village and Olympic Port.

Bohigas was a professor at the ETSAB Barcelona School of Architecture, later going on to become its director. In 1980, he was named delegate of the Area for Urban Planning with Barcelona City Council, later becoming the Councillor for Urban Planning in 1984. This was the time when Barcelona’s urban planning project would enable the city to become the host of the Olympic Games 1992. From 1991 to 1994, Bohigas was the Councillor for Culture.

Besides the city’s gold medal, the architect was awarded the Cross of Sant Jordi by the Government of Catalonia, was the opening speaker for La Mercè and won the City of Barcelona Award for International Projection. In 2006, he also received the National Award for Architecture.
