In February 1997, work began on the remodelling operations, which were completed on 12 May 1998. The works, carried out as part of an IMMB initiative agreed with the traders, followed the project designed by the architect Albert de Pineda i Álvarez.
The measures consisted of demolishing and reconstructing the market interior, building two new underground floors and restoring the facades and the roof. Installed on the first floor were the storeroom, the loading and unloading bay and a selective waste collection plant.
The building's two facades were retained, with only the wooden enclosure panels being replaced with glass walls. The remodelling also involved streamlining the number of stall and introducing new ones. The market was reopened on 16 May 1998.
