One of the city's century-old markets, it was born as an open-air market, located in Plaça de Sant Miquel.
Especially with the character of sailors and fishermen, the market since its origins was initially an open-air market in Plaça de Sant Miquel. It was the work of Antoni Rovira i Trias, coming into operation in 1887, thus being one of the city's century-old markets.
The bombing of the Spanish Civil War affected it significantly, forcing the reconstruction of the roof in 1939.
Architecture
The current building is the result of the refurbishment carried out between 2005 and 2007 by the Institute of Markets, following a project by Josep Miàs, the right-hand man of the late Enric Miralles the author, together with Benedetta Tagliabue, of the Santa Caterina market. The project preserves the characteristic original iron structure of the original market.
During the refurbishment, solar panels were also installed on the roof, generating 40% of the market's energy supply.
