Registration for the Mercabarna Awards against food waste has now opened

Registration is open until 15 October and there are four categories of awards.

Catalan producers, wholesalers, specialist shops and initiatives that combat food waste have until 15 October to submit a candidacy for theMercabarna Awards – Paco Muñoz. The aim of the awards is to promote and acknowledge the initiatives that are being implemented to fight food waste on the level of production and distribution in the food chain.

Through these awards, Mercabarna would like to reflect on the fact that every year a third of all food produced in the world is thrown away. The awards are also a tribute to Paco Muñoz, who fought against food waste throughout his professional career.

There are four categories of awards:

  • Best initiative for the production sector: Catalan producers from the fruit and vegetable, meat, and fish sectors, who apply measures to help reduce production waste can submit a candidacy in this category.
  • Best wholesaler initiative: Wholesalers with their registered offices in Catalonia from the fruit and vegetable, meat, and fish sectors, who apply measures to reduce food waste can submit a candidacy in this category.
  • Best retailer initiative: Specialist retailers with their registered offices in Catalonia, who sell products from the fruit and vegetable, meat, and fish sectors, who apply measures to reduce food waste can submit a candidacy in this category.
  • Best networking initiative: Initiatives that fight against food waste and are promoted by two or more stakeholders in the food chain and social organisations can submit a candidacy in this category,
