36 new pieces, ‘From the world to the Museum’

The permanent product design exhibition “From the world to the Museum” has incorporated 36 new pieces. With this extension, the Museum of Design compiles 250 objects representative of the most significant stages of industrial design in Catalonia and Spain, from the time of GATCPAC to today. "We want to be the showcase of what is happening in our house," said Pilar Vélez, director of the Design Museum of Barcelona during yesterday’s presentation, which gathered a large part of the creators of the objects that are now entering the exhibition, formed by more than 2,000 pieces. "It is the only collection in the State dedicated to product design," she said.

The new pieces enrich the dialogue of the exhibition, which claims those design objects that are part of our everyday lives as part of a cultural heritage. Among the new pieces that are on display, there are authors such as Gemma Bernal, Javier Mariscal and Curro Claret, as well as companies with significant trajectory such as Marset and Miele. Mut Design, Ana Hernando, CuldeSac Espacio Creativo and MADOM, among others, have also been added.

First opened in 2015, the exhibition "From the world to the Museum" is organized by three main concepts:

The ability of objects to become a reference. This concept brings together pieces that have become exponents of good design, successful prototypes, personalized designs as well as excellence. Among the recent incorporations Closca Fuga helmet (2016) by Closca Design, stands out. Closca Design was a pioneer in creating the first foldable bicycle helmet in the world, which does not lack in safety and security qualities. In addition, there is the cruet holder (1961) by Rafael Marquina and the Malla fruit bowl (1999) by Curro Claret.

The exploration of materials and techniques. Innovative, handmade, versatile, challenging, ergonomic and functional materials are concentrated in this field of exposure. An example is Tanka (1972), a simple and practical system for rope blockage, originally designed for mountain equipment and which is now used all over the world for all kinds of clothing. From the world of sport, the aerodynamic bike wheel HED3 (2005) is another addition to the collection.

Social recognition. Aspects such as the popularity of the piece, professional recognition and the ability to play with visual memory and evoke forms and sensations are the protagonists in this section of the sample. Clipper Classic (1970) by Enric Sardà, the world's first plastic rechargeable lighter; Javier Mariscal's Duplex stool (1981), the Os pendant (1985) of the Tous jewelry house, and FollowMe (2014), a table lamp by Inma Bermúdez which is compact, portable and rechargeable by USB.
