Legong is a traditional dance from the island of Bali, performed to the accompaniment of a gamelan, the traditional percussion ensemble of the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali. This highly stylized dance is characterized by precise hand and foot movements and a striking facial expressiveness, all closely synchronized with the dynamic flow and rhythm of the music.
The legong repertoire includes various dances, some of which narrate stories drawn from Balinese myths and legends, while others depict elements of nature. Originally created as entertainment for the nobility, this dance genre has since transcended its initial function and is now performed in dance schools and on stages across the island, becoming a cultural emblem of Balinese identity.
In this concert, Gamelan Barasvara, the resident ensemble of the Museu de la Música, collaborates with renowned Balinese dancers to present a program that explores both traditional and contemporary legong, as well as instrumental repertoire, featuring a performance with two premieres.
