Vehicles

The OMIC handles claims and enquiries relating not just to purchases and rentals of vehicles but also to repairs.

A few useful recommendations:

Purchases

If you are purchasing a second-hand vehicle,

  • You must check that it has successfully passed its Technical Vehicle Inspections (ITV).
  • You are also advised to have it checked by a trusted mechanic before you buy it. Remember that, in transactions between private individuals, the seller is only liable for latent defects in the vehicle.
  • You can ask the traffic authority for a “report on the vehicle” you wish to purchase in order to find out about any charges or incidents affecting the transaction.

Renting

  • It is important that you check the terms of the contract, whether they are the restrictions in the rental agreement, the items included in the price, the fuel policy or the terms of cancellation.
  • You must find out what is covered by the insurance and, if you want a second driver, you must check that they are insured for any damage they may cause.
  • If the model you have booked is not available, the company must provide an equivalent model. If they offer you a higher-quality vehicle, they cannot charge you a higher price. However, if the vehicle is of lower quality, they must adjust the price.
  • Examine the vehicle in advance with a company employee, make a note of any damage and get this signed by the employee. If possible, also take a photograph of any visible damage. You should also do this when returning it, in order to ensure that you are not charged for any repairs.

Repairs

  • You have the right to ask for a quote, which must be valid for 12 months.
  • If you leave the vehicle at the garage, ask for proof that you have left your car there. This must state the date of delivery. Once accepted and signed, the quote can serve as proof that you have left your car there.
  • You can cancel the repair order at any time. If you cancel it, you will only have to pay the cost of the work already carried out.
  • The garage can only repair any new faults or hidden defects found during the repair work with your prior agreement.
  • Once the vehicle has been repaired, the garage is required to provide an invoice with a breakdown of all charges.
  • You can only be charged for storing the vehicle if you take more than three working days to accept the quote or to remove the vehicle after the repairs.
  • Vehicle repairs are covered by a warranty of 3 months or 2,000 km. In the case of industrial vehicles, the repair warranty is for 15 days or 2,000 km.
