Training option for young people neither studying nor working

Education. The School of Second Opportunities opens in 2019 in the Navas neighbourhood in Sant Andreu.

The first School of Second Opportunities is to open in 2019, enabling young people between the ages of 16 and 25 to get back to studying and improve their prospects of accessing the labour market.

According to the report by the Fundació BCN Formació Professional 2016, there are 17,000 young people between the ages of 16 and 24 in Barcelona who are neither studying nor working. Most of these youngsters are poorly qualified, have difficulties continuing or getting back to their studies and are not ready to enter the labour market.

The goal of the School of Second Opportunities is for young people who are neither working nor studying as a result of poor qualifications can get back to regular studies, improving their job prospects in turn. Each student will have an individual project according to their profiles, needs and interests.

The school will be located at C/ Capella 10, in the Navas neighbourhood in the district of Sant Andreu. It will offer 60 places during the 2018-2019 academic year, with a view to offering 120 places during the 2020-2021 academic year. Young people in one of the following situations will get access:

  • Secondary school studies completed without gaining qualifications.
  • Secondary school completed, but gave up studying.
  • Unemployed, with no professional qualifications.

Personalised study plans and guidance

Teaching coordinators, counsellors and educators at the school will be working with high schools and social services in the city from February to May 2019, in preparation for the next school year. Once students are enrolled, work will start with them and their families to embark on a personalised study itinerary for each of them as from September.

The centre will provide professional training, with insertion programmes, professional certificates, training in crafts and trades, training programmes alternating with the world of work through alliances with different businesses and organisations, personalised itineraries, basic skills building and programmes with social entities. Advice and support will also be offered before, during and after students’ time at the school.
