The conditions for participating in the World Data Viz Challenge 2019 Barcelona-Kobe, a contest organized by the city councils of Barcelona and Kobe, have recently been published. Its objective is to encourage citizens to contribute to improving different aspects of the city by analysing and visualising data in formats that may go from infographics, graphics, interactive maps, among others. The challenge will take place at the same time in both cities and final projects will be presented in Barcelona.
Origin of the contest
In 1993, the cities of Barcelona and Kobe signed a twinning agreement to promote cultural, educational, sports, economic and technological exchange. Two years later, after an earthquake that affected the Japanese city, Barcelona collaborated with the delivery of humanitarian aid. In 2018, the 25th anniversary of the twinning took place and, to celebrate it, both municipalities jointly organized the first edition of the World Data Viz Challenge Barcelona-Kobe. Due to the success of this first call, which had a great participation both for the number and for the quality of the projects presented, in 2019 the challenge to citizenship is again proposed by launching this second edition.
As in the 2018 edition, dataviz can deal with any aspect related to the city of Barcelona. However, this year it has been decided to emphasize a topic of great relevance and impact: the cities and the climatic emergency, in alignment with the Climate Plan, which integrates all the lines of work carried out by the Barcelona City Council regarding the challenge of climate change. The organizers allow participants to cover this or any other topic, and the contest is regarded as a very good opportunity to bring new and interesting ideas.
The web of this edition offers all the information about the call, its contents, objectives, deadlines, the Open Data BCN portal, form of evaluation of the works, prizes, etc.
