BCNROC is implemented with DSpace 5 open-source software, which complies with the OAI-PMH protocol and allows for the use of the standards from the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) 

Given the wide variety of documents included, it was necessary in some cases to consider a specific qualifier to respond to Barcelona City Council's special information needs. These metadata are those bearing an asterisk in the document "Metadades del Repositori BCNROC [Cat]".

To minimise the time needed for departments and publishers to self-publish their documents in BCNROC, the descriptive metadata they must introduce has been limited to a minimum of 3 metadata (author, date of creation and title) and the assignation of the corresponding rights licence for each document.

SEDAC is tasked with completing the metadata for the document once it is visible via the repository, to favour the immediacy of its appearance online.
