Police campaign to regulate cyclists and personal mobility vehicles

The City Police are starting a new week-long campaign from Monday, 16 January, to regulate the conduct of cyclists and riders of personal mobility vehicles (PMV). The goal is to ensure the correct use of these vehicles through compliance with the conditions for their circulation and the use of cycles with more than two wheels.

The proliferation of personal mobility vehicles in recent years, such as electric scooters, Segways and electric hoverwheels, has affected interaction with all other vehicles and users in public streets and squares.

To ensure correct coexistence in streets and other public places, the City Police will be alert to conduct by cyclists and PMV riders which poses risks, as well as inappropriate parking and distractions while driving or riding, particularly where this might put pedestrians in physical danger. Special attention will be given to infringements linked to jumping traffic lights, disregard for pedestrian crossings and the right of pedestrians to circulate safely on pavements.

The campaign forms part of the goal of bringing down the number of accidents involving personal mobility vehicles, the number of victims and the severity of injuries.

Road accident victims are avoidable and greater awareness is needed so that society as a whole can halve the number of serious injuries and deaths, as indicated in the Road Safety Strategy 2030.

The campaign will also pay special attention to class C1 vehicles engaging in economic activity in the city, mainly rickshaws along the seafront, and premises offering rentals of personal mobility vehicles, bicycles and cycles with more than two wheels.
