The first refurbished Montjuïc escalators are now in operation
The first phase of the refurbishment of the 22 escalators in Parc Montjuïc is complete and works will continue until the first quarter of 2026. The project is partially funded by European Next Generation funds as part of the Barcelona Destination Sustainable Tourism Plan.

The refurbishing of the escalators at Parc Montjuïc, which aims to improve accessibility across the entire mountain, is making steady progress.
The first phase of the refurbishment began in November, and escalators 9, 10, 19, and 20 are already in operation, providing access to the Catalan National Art Museum (MNAC) from Carrer de la Guàrdia Urbana. Work will then continue with the replacement of the escalators running from Plaça de Carles Buïgas to Passeig de Jean Claude Nicolas Forestier.
The project, which has a budget of 7.8 million euros and is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2026, is partially funded by Next Generation EU funds under the Barcelona Destination Sustainable Tourism Plan.
Accessible and energy-efficient escalators
‘The new escalators improve connections with the cultural and sports facilities on the mountain and enhance the experience for both residents and visitors, making Parc Montjuïc a more open, integrated, and easily accessible space,’ said Laia Bonet, First Deputy Mayor of Barcelona City Council and Chair of BSM, which carried out the works. They are also more energy-efficient and sustainable, incorporating a remote control and monitoring system that optimises their operation and reduces their CO2 footprint.
