Consensus of tourism representatives, unions and citizens for a reactivation of tourism that strengthens its sustainability, security, resilience and added value

Tourism. The Tourism and City Council issues a statement calling for joint efforts to promote best practices

The Tourism and City Council of Barcelona City Council, which brings toghether nearly 40 entities, neighbour’ s associations, guilds, professionals,  trade unions,  travel agencies and members of the City Council, advocates “ for recovering tourist activity as soon as possible, and  for doing  so in a way that strengthens sustainability, security, resilience and added value”.

In a joint statement, the Council points out the need for “Barcelona to strengthen the visitor’ s economy, in a renewed and different way and with better practices, necessarily compatible with the lives of residents, which is essential for the proper functioning of the city.”

The Council advocates that “all possible efforts” be joined in and that public-private-community collaboration be strengthened in order to recover the city’s touristic activity as soon as possible and thus move towards an economic reactivation that reinforces elements such as social and environmental sustainability, resilience, health security and the contribution of added value to the city in terms not only of attracting visitors, but also of talent and investment”.

The document also points out as a priority “to protect employment, but always ensuring fair working conditions that do not promote job insecurity”. Also expresses “our desire for the socio-economic recovery of the city to begin as soon as possible, as long as the health indicators allow it and that Barcelona reinforces, in a renewed way and with best practices, an economy of the visitor, necessarily compatible with the life of the residents, that is indispensable for the good operation of the city”.

The Standing Committee of the Tourism and City Council highlights the importance of economic activity for the city, and the serious impact suffered in this current context, and proposes “moving forward towards an economic reactivation of the sector that strengthens elements such as sustainability social and environmental, resilience, health security and the addition of added value to the city in terms not only of attracting visitors, but also of talent and investment”.

 More than 40 entities and actors related to tourism in the city

The Tourism and City Council is the stable body of citizen’ s participation with consultative and advisory character that is formed by near 40 organizations, associations of neighbours,  trade unions, professionals, retailers, travel agencies, besides experts, city hall staff and representatives of the municipal groups, with the aim of debating and participating in the elaboration of the public policies in the matter of tourism of the City council.

The permanent commission of this body has agreed on this joint declaration as a tool for the prioritization and consensual action of all the agents and actors of the tourist activity in the city.

The statement also expresses the solidarity and support of all members to all those who have lost relatives or close people, thanks the effort to health personnel and sends a message of encouragement to business people and workers in the sector “who are suffering a great situation of uncertainty ”.
