"Huellas". Humberto Rivas

20 October 2016 - 8 April 2017

The Arxiu Fotogràfic de Barcelona (Barcelona Photographic Archive) presents the exhibition Huellas. Humberto Rivas, comprising 53 photographs taken between 1995 and 2005, the result of a journey to track down locations and people linked with the Spanish Civil War. Whether it is the faces of people, or ruins or buildings, the photographs of Humberto Rivas (Buenos Aires, 1937–Barcelona, 2009) open up a fundamental panorama composed of absences and the effects of the passing of time. The silent gaze of the individuals and the obsolescence of the objects evoke a silenced memory.

Humberto Rivas’ photographs assert the historical memory. They are evocative, but not nostalgic, because they are reaffirmed by historical time. In the words of Walter Benjamin, each person 'seizes hold of a memory as it flashes up at a moment of danger'.

“Huellas” collection incomes to Barcelona Photographic Archive in 2009.
