Decorative Arts

Established in 1888, when Barcelona hosted the Universal Exposition and awareness began to form of the importance of conserving the city’s heritage, the collection ranges from the Late Middle Ages to the early twentieth century, and focuses on Europe, especially Spanish and Catalan pieces.

The historical collections contain examples of different typologies and artistic techniques. One of the most complete and important is the furniture collection, which conserves many fine pieces, ranging from medieval coffers to chests of drawers, Renaissance and baroque desks, sets of chairs, beds, Catalan commodes, whole rooms and pieces illustrating Modernisme, Noucentisme and Art Deco.

The glass collection, featuring sixth- and seventh-century Catalan enamelled pieces, is also remarkable, as are those devoted to clocks and watches (sixteenth-nineteenth century), basins (sixteenth century) miniature portraits (eighteenth-nineteenth century), carriages (eighteenth-nineteenth century), ivory, goldsmithery, leather hangings and fans.
