Graphic Arts Collection

This collection is formed by pieces both historic and contemporary that illustrate the technological evolution of the graphic arts over three centuries. Accordingly, most of the holdings comprise dies, typographies (with the typefaces, punches and dies from important sets ranging from the eighteenth to the twentieth century), photogravure and intaglio plates by numerous local artists.

Particularly outstanding is the collection of typographic models from the Impremta Reial or royal printers (18th-19th century), those by such essential artists as Eudald Canibell (1858-1928) and woodcut printing blocks, which are important in terms of both quantity and quality, by such artists as Josep Obiols (1894-1967).

The collection also contains a treasure-trove of printed matter that begins in the eighteenth century and focuses, basically, on the last third of the nineteenth and the early years of the twentieth. This heritage includes such genres as popular engraving (Amades Collection), wallpaper (19th-20th century), endpapers (18th-19th century), book covers, packs of cards, advertising and packaging (including labels and wrappers).

Originally, most of these exhibits come from Barcelona printers, such as Bobes, Roca i Alemany and Seix Barral.
