Sketching Barcelona immerses us in the city’s fascinating magic through the eyes and talent of the renowned French artist Lapin, @lapinbarcelona on Instagram. This new creation, co-published with Hoaki Books, promises to take readers on a unique journey through the most emblematic streets, squares and nooks of Barcelona.
The presentation, which was held at the French bookshop Jaimes, was much more than just a literary event and was instead a warm gathering between the author and his large group of followers, where they explored issues like urban sketching and the city’s urban transformation over time.
During the conversation with Chamo San (@chamo_san on Instagram), Lapin shared his unique vision of Barcelona as a ‘modern explorer’ whose sketchbooks are testimonies of his urban discoveries. His warm, detailed graphic style has captivated fans all over the world, and in this new book, he offers an original look at the city he loves so well. San praised Lapin’s ability to capture the essence of Barcelona in every line. Together they explored the city’s evolution and the role of art in documenting its history and transformation.
Declaration of love for Barcelona
Sketching Barcelona is not only a book; it’s also a declaration of love for Barcelona, a city that the author —who has been living here for around 17 years— considers his home and a constant source of inspiration. In its pages, readers can travel around the cobblestone streets of the Gothic Quarters, wonder at the majesty of the Sagrada Família and get lost in the bohemian atmosphere of the Raval with the author’s artistic gaze. This book is more than just a compilation of drawings; it is the testimony of a profound bond between the artist and Barcelona, an invitation to rediscover it through a unique, personal lens.
The exhibition of sketches at the bookshop, which will be open until late April, is a unique chance to immerse yourself in the author’s creative universe and explore Barcelona from his vantage point. During the presentation, Lapin also shared details about the genesis of this special project. He revealed that the inspiration for Sketching Barcelona came on a Christmas holiday in 2022. At that time, he and his daughter decided to rediscover Barcelona by visiting emblematic sites like Park Güell and El Carmel. This experience was the spark that kindled his passion to capture the city on paper. Lapin also shared details on his appointment as a captain in the French air force in 2019; this honorary title has given him privileged access to different air bases, where he has found inspiration for his artistic projects.
