Housing. The model fosters anti-speculative housing with a social function.

Built on a symbolic site in the local struggle for the right to housing in Barceloneta, the flats adopt an anti-speculative model with a social function. The land will always by publicly owned and has been leased to the cooperative for a period of 75 years.

The eight flats match the needs of the families in La Xarxaire and the block offers communal spaces on the ground floor and the rooftop. The ground-floor premises will have a display space open to the local neighbourhood for the promotion of artistic and cultural initiatives.

La Xarxaire is the sixth cohousing project on leased municipal land. The city now has 125 cooperative flats in all, with another 11 projects planned, adding a further 290 homes.

How does cohousing work?

Municipally owned land is leased to a cooperative, in this case La Xarxaire, for a period of 75 years. The land remains publicly owned and the housing built on the site is classified as protected housing.

These buildings usually have communal spaces and services to suit the particularities of their residents.
