Parc de la Citadella to get a new entrance in C/ Wellington
The new entrance to the Parc de la Ciutadella will connect the Vila Olímpica and Ciutat Vella, as well as the different facilities of the Ciutadella del Coneixement knowledge hub, with a path crossing the gardens. The final project will now be drafted, the idea being for work to begin in 2026.
The path will be at least 20 metres wide and make the most of existing trees, with more also to be added.
In all the project will create 26,000 square metres using granite sand and other permeable materials to replace the existing paving. Lighting will also be improved.
Historical entrance to connect the future
The entrance to the park in C/Wellington appeared in the original project by Josep Fontseré but was eliminated to make way for an entrance to the Zoo.
Regaining the entrance will facilitate access to the park for local people arriving on foot from Sant Martí or getting off the metro or the tram at the station of Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica.
The entrance will also connect the neighbourhoods of Vila Olímpica, Poblenou and Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera, as well as the different facilities making up the Ciutadella del Coneixement knowledge hub: the new research complex is being built at the former fish market, the future CSIC Biosciences Centre, the Hivernacle, the Umbracle, the Centre Martorell d’Exposicions, the Castell dels Tres Dragons and the Biblioteca Central Urbana de Barcelona.
The project should also strengthen the activity of Barcelona Zoo.
Park in renovation
The creation of a new entrance to the Parc de la Ciutadella comes in addition to the renovation work already under way. This includes improvements to drainage, paving, tree beds, curbs, the watering system and water fountains in the park.
