Mon, 12/02/2024 - 12:04

Safety and prevention. Staff from the Fire Service will be at the Hospitals of Sant Pau, Clínic and Vall d’Hebron, encouraging people to take part and accompanying those who donate.

The campaign gets under way at the Espai Bombers, with volunteers from the corps giving blood and plasma. The campaign runs until Friday and various hospitals in the city are taking part. The initiative is open to anybody wishing to donate.

Anybody wishing to give blood can do so at the following locations on the following dates:

  • Espai Bombers: Monday 12, from 10 am to 2 pm and from 4 pm to 8 pm
  • Hospital de Sant Pau: Monday 12 and Friday 16, from 9 am to 8 pm.
  • Hospital Clínic: Tuesday 13 and Thursday 15, from 8.30 am to 8 pm.
  • Hospital de la Vall d’Hebron: Wednesday 14, from 8.30 am to 8 pm.

Staff from various fire stations will be at the participating hospitals with a vehicle outside, encouraging people to take part in the campaign and accompanying those who give blood.

Those wishing to donate can book a time slot here.

Platelets, one of the elements extracted in each blood donation, expire after five days, while red blood cells last 42 days. Because of this, blood donations are needed all year round. Each donation benefits three people and the blood is used for different illnesses, the highest number of transfusions being for cancer treatment.

Who can give blood?

  • People aged between 18 and 70 who weigh over 50 kilos
  • Even if they suffered hepatitis before the age of 12
  • Donors do not need to fast beforehand
  • Even if cholesterol levels are high
  • Even if they take common types of medication

Women can give blood a maximum of three times a year and men, a maximum of four. A minimum period of two months must pass between donations. If you have had Covid you will need to wait 7 days after your symptoms clear to give blood. Vaccination against Covid does not prevent you from giving blood or plasma, although if you suffer any side effects such as a fever or general malaise, you will also need to wait 7 days. If you are interested, you can find more information about factors conditioning the donation of blood.

This campaign is an initiative by Bombers Solidaris de Barcelona, Bombers amb Cor (the solidary collective from the Catalan Fire Service) and the Blood and Tissue Bank.
