Essay film (or the dangerous means of mixing the personal with the present)

Workshop, led by Andrés Duque, aimed at exploring the essay film genre as a means of expression. Digital art invites us to ask: What is the function of cinema today? What is left of its relationship with ‘the real’? Why and for what purpose are images being gathered compulsively on computers? What can be done with them?

Throughout the seven session answers to these questions will be sought using personal and other images, imparting them with new meaning and freeing them from traditional narrative judgements, while highlighting the perspectives on the world held by each of the participants.

Andrés Duque is a Hispano-Venezuelan filmmaker and Professor of Film at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. He is also director of the documentary Ivan Z (2004) and the feature films Color perro que huye (2010) and Ensayo final para la Utopía (2012).
