City Police campaign to combat speeding

11/03/2024 - 13:32 h

The week-long campaign will specifically target speeding, one of the main causes of accidents.

The campaign will run until 17 March, placing special emphasis on speeding in general or in specific street sections, where excessive speeds pose potential or specific risks to the safety of anybody using public streets.

Speed checks will mainly be set up in streets where accidents have occurred as a result of excessive speeds, or where specific problems have been identified in this respect, such as the ring roads and other roads inside the city.

Units will be mobilised in areas with 30 km/h speed limits, streets where pedestrians have priority and spaces with curbless paving. Different speed cameras will be used and the operation will be complemented with awareness messages on information panels around the road network.

The aim is to reduce accidents and the injuries they cause to people, as speed is one of the most common factors in road accidents. According to the latest road accident figures, speeding was the third most common indirect factor in road accidents in 2023, even though there was a drop compared to the figures from 2022.

The improvement in road safety corresponds to one of the strategic areas of the current Urban Mobility Plan. Road accident victims can be avoided, and we must gain awareness so that all relevant parties can play an increasing part in reaching the goals of halving the number of fatalities and injured, as set out in the Road Safety Strategy 2030, with a view to achieving zero victims by 2050.
