Safety and prevention. One of the topics addressed was the importance of safety in dispersing large numbers of people.

The meeting by the Spanish Forum for Urban Safety and Prevention (FEPSU) is being held in Xàbia, in the Valencia region, on Thursday and Friday, 1 and 2 February. The meeting looks at reducing risks in crowded places. The City Police are taking part, with the deputy inspector from the Operational Unit for Reinforcement, Emergencies and Proximity giving two talks.

The first talk is part of the section devoted to operational development and looks at technical inspections. The second focuses on managing events once they are over and is entitled “Recovering public space. Recovering the beach after Sant Joan”.

Both talks go into more detail about some of the topics in the session: the importance of security in dispersing build-ups of people at big events, organisation and planning to avoid accidents and guarantee efficient responses in emergency situations, and the need for collaboration between the community, public administrations and organisations.

FEPSU, which Barcelona City Council is a member of, is an association of municipalities and local organisations to defend the promotion of public policies on safety and prevention, through debate and the networked exchange of good practices to tackle urban security challenges for cities.

The association promotes the dissemination of experiences, projects and public policies between cities through meetings, day events, seminars, working sessions and publications. It also has a consultative role in the formulation of projects linked to public policies on safety and prevention.
