The Focused! season of talks is intended to raise awareness of the rise of women photographers, with all the difficulties they have faced and the heights they have achieved. The Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya has played an important role in this evolution thanks to a range of initiatives, among them the creation of the Women’s Group in the 1950s and the subsequent international presence it established. Consequently, we propose a local but also a global vision of women photographers. 

The purpose of this talk is to unravel what was arranged in a certain way in the history of photography in the first half of the twentieth century, in order to give visibility to the artistic and photographic work of some women of this period.

Marta Gili is an art critic and curator of exhibitions and public programmes. Between 1991 and 2006 she was responsible for the visual arts programme of the “la Caixa” Foundation; from 2006 to 2018, she was director of Jeu de Paume in Paris. Since 2019 she has been the director of the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles.
