Susan Sontag’s emblematic essay On Photography (1977) serves as the title and an invocation for this series of conversations between photographers who work in very different national and international contexts.

The idea is to relate different practices, as well as opposing positions and paradigms, but also complementary ones. We understand that in enunciating one’s work, there is a way of constructing the public sphere, a way of exposing one’s self and collectively determining the extent of the message, but especially its place in the community.

Bettina Lockemann (Berlin, 1971) was a professor of the theory and practice of photography for five years at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. She studied photography and art media at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. She holds a PhD in art history, awarded by the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart. Her recent exhibitions are: Gerade eben da (Loris – Galerie für zeitgenössische Kunst, Berlin, 2017), Crossing the Jungle (Goethe-Institut, Bangalore, India, 2016) and Vom Rand aus (gallery of the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig, 2013). Her publications include: État d’urgence (Spector Books, Leipzig, 2016), Vom Rand aus (Fotohof Edition, Salzburg, 2013), Kontaktzonen (Hatje Cantz, Ostfildern, 2011) and Das Fremde sehen (Transcript, Bielefeld, 2008), as well as numerous essays and other writings on documentary photography.

Julia Schulz-Dornburg (Munich, 1962) qualified as an architect in 1990, graduating from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. She has had her own professional office in Barcelona since 1993. She has received the City of Barcelona Prize, the Maresme Triennial Prize for Architecture and two FAD Awards for Ephemeral Spaces. She is the author of Arte y Arquitectura: nuevas afinidades (Gustavo Gili, 2000) and Ruinas modernas, una topografía de lucro (Ámbit, 2012).
