Questioning images, conversing with them, listening to them, taming them, freeing them, recontextualising them; disassociating the image from the sound, the sound from the word, the word from the meaning; understanding life itself as a stage, fostering the dialectic between authenticity and interpretation in an attempt to create identity. These are some of the critical tools that Cortiñas examines throughout the journey of her career. In addition, the artist will give us an insight into her archive of unfinished works, of mistaken paths and of dead-end streets in search of what is often indomitable in found footage.
Eli Cortiñas (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1979). She studied at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and has secured numerous residencies and awards, notably from the German Academy of Rome at Villa Massimo and the Goethe-Institut Turin, as well as the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff grant and, more recently, the Kunstfonds grant. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions at institutions like the Berlinische Galerie, the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, the Kunsthalle Budapest, the Marta Herford Museum, the Kunstraum Innsbruck, the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, the Centro de Arte La Regenta, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC), among others. Her videos have been shown at international festivals like the III Moscow International Biennale for Young Art, the II Mardin Biennial, Prospectif Cinéma at the Centre Pompidou, and the Oberhausen, Vila do Conde and Nashville film festivals.
