Textiles and fashion

Barcelona was a major centre for the textile industry for a long time and had a large number of factories. In addition to textiles and spinning, some manufacturers, especially in the Maresme area, produced knitwear, including stockings and socks, shirts, sweaters, swimsuits and gloves.

From the 1920s onwards, advertising encouraged people to wear fashionable “fantasy pieces”, whose wearers always appeared happy and smiling.
To advertise their wares, luxury industries, such as furriers, turned to renowned professionals like Josep Porta, a refined illustrator who worked for women’s and fashion magazines. He was the author of exquisite shop-counter displays.
